July 2023 E-News

See how we're honoring this important month

July is Bebe Moore Campbell Minority Mental Health Awareness Month

Since 2008, July has been recognized as Bebe Moore Campbell National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month. This serves as a time to honor and continue the work of Bebe Campbell Moore, advocate, author, and co-founder of NAMI Urban Los Angeles, to create spaces of healing where BIPOC communities can find inclusive mental health resources.

In honor of this month, BHSB is partnering with NAMI Metro Baltimore, Black Mental Health Alliance, Centro Sol and Maryland Peer Advocacy Council for a virtual conversation on the factors impacting Baltimore City youth's mental health and resources needed to support their resilience.

It's been one year since the CALL 988 Helpline launched

Since its launch in July 2022, the 988 has helped more Marylanders get the support they need. In the first nine months calls to the helpline increased by 38% and use of the text feature exploded.

To recognize this important milestone, helpline counselors, community members, local and Maryland state officials came together to say what the CALL 988 Helpline means for Marylanders.

988 in the news

"Before the launch, we did extensive community outreach to see what they wanted from us. We were told, 'make me believe it.' We need to make sure this is a resource people can trust, so we're working directly with community leaders as ambassadors to help raise awareness."
