May 2023 E-News

Mental health resources, event recaps and more...

May is Mental Health Awareness Month

Trauma can affect anyone, but we know that systemic injustices and stigma can greatly increase the likelihood that someone might be impacted by trauma.

Because of this, it is crucial to acknowledge and understand the impact of trauma on the mental health of Baltimoreans, while making space to celebrate the city’s beauty and resilience.

Here's what BHSB staff had to say about being trauma-informed:

"This inherently inclusive and culturally adaptive approach builds on the community's natural supports and recovery pathways that are organically accepted as trusted agents of healing."

Terri Alexander

Community Resilience Coordinator

"Addressing the many issues that are going on in Baltimore can't be done with a cookie cutter approach. You have to listen to people's experience and give them the resources they need to heal."

Montressa Tripps

Community Education Coordinator

"Trauma-informed care and harm reduction both require awareness of how systems cause harm. That means taking into account the entire person and meeting them where they are."

Mark Sine

Recovery Services Coordinator

Baltimore City Youth say, "I Choose Me," during National Prevention Week

Every year, BHSB joins SAMHSA in recognizing National Prevention Week.

It is a time to help our young people make smart choices about substance use and positive mental health.

More than 700 Baltimore City middle and high schoolers joined BHSB, resource providers and awesome entertainers for two days of fun while learning how to make healthy life choices.

NAMIWalks is Back!

On Saturday, May 20, we joined NAMI Metro Baltimore and hundreds of Marylanders at NAMIWalks.

This was the first in-person walk since 2020 and we had a great time coming together to take steps to end the stigma associated with mental health.
