Mental Health Month recap, where to find us this summer and more...

This year we turned our focus to the importance of supporting the mental health and wellness of Black men and boys because we know historical racism and stigma make it harder to feel safe asking for help.

BHSB staff and partners shared their experiences and ideas for breaking down stigma and building a stronger system to make mental health resources more accessible for Black men and boys.

"Having an older man to guide them is important. Even though I didn’t have a dad growing up, other men really were always looking out for me. And, I’m grateful I get to be that person now and tell these guys that nobody’s going to clown you. You can see the weight come off their shoulders."

Devin Waters

Prevention Coordinator

"We need affordable and accessible holistic tools that center the client‘s perspective, rather than the clinician perspective. The more we find culturally-relevant ways to foster Black men and boys by directly addressing racial trauma and its effects, the more society will benefit."

Thornton Armstead

Criminal Justice Care Coordinator

"There is a huge void of Black men working in mental health. It’s not just about hiring Black men - we need to make sure they have the tools to be successful. If we commit to supporting them, you’ll start to see a shift in how Black boys and men access mental health resources."

Sal Corbin

MaHRTI Coordinator
